Towards the end of January 2003, the president of the government, José María Aznar, had a meeting with Scott McNealy, the managing director of Sun Microsystems. At the meeting they established the basis of an agreement under which the technology company would cede 9 million licences for the office computer package StarOffice to Ministry of Education users. The operation is valued at some 725 million euros and will be used to provide Spanish schoolchildren with computer tools free of charge. This product includes a text processor, a spreadsheet, a programme for preparing presentations and a tool for making graphics. Countries like China, Chile, Germany, Great Britain, France and Finland have already benefited from these agreements, so that its use has extended to some 240 million students.
